Qianxi is located in the eastern part of the Wumeng Plateau, along the middle reaches of the Wujiang River, and on the north bank of the Yachi River. It is 68 kilometres from the provincial capital, Guiyang, and 77 kilometres from the seat of the Bijie Municipal Government in Qixingguan District. It is known as the ‘Gateway to Water West, the Bulwark of Guiyang, the Heartland of Guizhou, and the Throat of the Provincial Capital,’ and is renowned as the ‘Capital of Rhododendrons in China.’ The city covers a total area of 2,380.9 square kilometres, comprising 25 townships, 5 sub-districts, and 364 administrative villages. It is home to 18 ethnic groups, including the Han, Yi, and Miao, with a total population of 964,800.
Qianxi boasts a rich cultural heritage. As early as 500,000 to 600,000 years ago, humans inhabited this area. The Guanyin Cave Paleoanthropological Site is the birthplace of the earliest human ancestors in southern China, earning it the reputation of ‘Guanyin Cave in the south, Zhoukoudian in the north.’ The Shuixi regime endured for 15 centuries, setting the record for the longest-lasting local government in Chinese history. Here lies the ‘Longchang Nine Post Stations’ ancient post road, which embodies the historical achievements of the outstanding Ming Dynasty female stateswoman Lady Shaxiang, the ancient Xiang Temple, which embodies the philosophical thought of the great Ming Dynasty scholar Wang Yangming that ‘there is no one who cannot be educated,’ the hometown of Li Shijie, the Minister of War who left a reputation for integrity in Qing history, and historical and cultural landmarks such as the Sanchu Palace, the Wumiao Temple, and the Shuixi Ancient City, which bear the imprint of Qianxi civilisation, as well as the Yachi River Battle Site, a red revolutionary site where blood was shed. This is the birthplace of the Guizhou local opera genre ‘Qian Opera,’ where the ancient and elegant ‘Wenqin Opera,’ the lively and entertaining ‘Hua Deng Opera,’ and the primitive and rugged ‘Tai Lai Yang Opera’ all have their unique charms and are highly captivating.
Qianxi enjoys a prominent geographical advantage. It is a key county town in the province's strategy for the development of medium and large cities, a satellite city of the provincial capital Guiyang, an important node city in Guiyang's one-hour economic circle, and the eastern gateway to Bijie City. It boasts a transportation advantage with the Guizhou-Qianxi, Qianxi-Zhi, Qianxi-Da, Baiqian, and Xiquan expressways, as well as the Chengdu-Guiyang high-speed railway, collectively known as the ‘Five Highways and One Railway.’ It serves as the first strategic gateway for tourism, logistics, and commerce flowing northwestward from the Qianzhong Economic Circle, with superior development foundations and immense potential.
Qianxi is rich in natural resources. It serves as Guizhou Province's ‘West-to-East Power Transmission’ energy base, with estimated coal reserves exceeding 7 billion tonnes and annual hydropower runoff totaling 7.7 billion cubic metres. Currently, there are large and medium-sized coal mines such as Qinglong, Guiqing, and Xintian, as well as large power plants like Qianxi Power Plant, Hongjiadu, and Suofengying, with a total installed power capacity of 2.81 million kilowatts. The forest coverage rate reaches 45.27%, ensuring a well-preserved natural ecosystem and a fresh, beautiful environment.
Qianxi boasts stunning natural landscapes. The Wujiang River Source Hundred-Mile Scenic Corridor, ranked first among China's top ten karst lakes, features mountains resembling the Three Gorges but with water superior to the Three Gorges, and water resembling the Li River but with mountains superior to the Li River; Guizhou's first lake cluster wetland park—the Shuixi Kehai National Wetland Park—features over 30 lakes of various sizes nestled among lush pine forests, with lake reflections that are truly enchanting; Additionally, the vast and majestic Zhiga'alu Lake, the stunning Shuixi Cave and Baxian Cave, the diverse Dongfeng Lake, the breathtakingly beautiful Suofeng Lake, and the ecologically beautiful Zhongguo River are just a few of the many scenic spots worth mentioning.
The urban and rural environments of Qianxi are pleasant. The urban area has a spacious and flat terrain, with skyscrapers standing side by side, roads crisscrossing, and facilities complete, covering an area of 18.6 square kilometres, exuding a modern urban atmosphere. Unique and picturesque rural villages are scattered throughout the region, with the well-arranged traditional dwellings of northwestern Guizhou harmoniously blending with the rustic and refreshing rural landscape. Jiefang Village is renowned as one of ‘China's Ten Most Charming Rural Villages,’ Huawuji is known as ‘Guizhou Province's Miao Ethnic Dance and Music Homeland,’ and Dahuazi is hailed as ‘Guizhou's Most Charming Ethnic Village.’ Zhongjian Yingpan Village is lush with forests, and Huahai Renjia is nestled by mountains and water. Wulouba Buyei Village is an ideal destination for sightseeing, leisure, agricultural experiences, and health retreats. Qiulín Village boasts scenic landscapes with peach and plum blossoms in full bloom. Beautiful villages such as Linquan Haizi and Yuduo Chenni are emerging like spring bamboo shoots across the Water West region.
Qianxi is rich in ethnic customs. The local customs are simple and honest, and the Yi ethnic group's Torch Festival, the Miao ethnic group's Flower Dance Festival, the Bouyei ethnic group's June 6th Festival, the Bai ethnic group's March 3rd Festival, the Manchu ethnic group's Golden Festival, and the Gelao ethnic group's New Rice Festival are rich in content, colourful, and full of characteristics. The local specialties are irresistible. Delicacies like spicy crispy snacks, Zhao Lao Wu yellow rice cakes, rice cake-wrapped tofu, and pounded tea rice cakes will make your mouth water; bamboo-carved birdcages, root carvings, wax printing, embroidery, paper cutting, and ethnic clothing will leave you wanting more.
2023 marks the inaugural year for the comprehensive implementation of the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, a mission that inspires and motivates us. Over the past year, we have leveraged our strengths, addressed weaknesses, and upgraded our capabilities, with our brand image gaining increasing recognition. The Huayu Resort Campground and Alpaca Town have commenced operations, attracting domestic and international tourists to experience and ‘check in’ at these destinations. Cultural tourism, sports tourism, and agricultural tourism have been deeply integrated, with Qianxi selected as one of the ‘Top 100 Counties with Potential for Tourism Development in China in 2023.’ Over the past year, we have focused on people's livelihood and listened to public opinion, and people's livelihood issues have been properly resolved. We built 23 urban and rural emergency water supply projects in the shortest possible time, won the battle against drought, completed and put into use the new campus of No. 1 Middle School, and completed and opened the Lisha Avenue ‘dead-end road,’ winning continuous praise from the public.
