Gaolan County has a history of over 2,100 years since its establishment in the Western Han Dynasty. First set up as Jincheng County in 127 BC, it was renamed Gaolan County in 1738 and remained the leading county of Gansu Province until the Republic of China.
Located on the Longxi Loess Plateau, it features a terrain sloping from northwest to southeast, with the lowest altitude of 1,411 meters. The county has an average annual temperature of 7.4℃, average annual precipitation of 246 millimeters, average annual evaporation of 1,675 millimeters, average annual sunshine of 2,768 hours, and a frost-free period of 144 days.

Administratively, it has jurisdiction over 8 towns (including 4 towns entrusted to Lanzhou New Area), with actual administration over 4 towns, 38 administrative villages, and 4 communities. The total population is 112,000, covering a total area of 1,682 square kilometers, including 315,700 mu of cultivated land.

Gaolan County is located at the core of the golden triangle connecting downtown Lanzhou, Lanzhou New Area, and Baiyin urban area. The county seat is 35 kilometers from downtown Lanzhou, 23 kilometers from Lanzhou New Area, and 29 kilometers from Baiyin urban area, serving as a key node in Gansu’s "One Core, Three Belts" regional development pattern.
Adjacent to Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport and Zhongchuan Railway Port, it is connected by the Baotou-Lanzhou Railway, with the Beijing-Tibet Expressway and Lanzhou-Qinzhou Expressway crisscrossing the territory. It is a promising investment destination with great development potential.

Gaolan County is known as the "Hometown of Taiping Drum" and "Hometown of Chinese Folk Culture and Art". Taiping Drum, Lanzhou Guzi (a local ballad), and Wei Zhenjie’s calligraphy are the three cultural business cards of the county.
There are 23 representative intangible cultural heritage projects in the county. Among them, Taiping Drum and Lanzhou Guzi are listed as national intangible cultural heritage; Taiping Song, Tiexinzi (Iron Core Performance), Tianbashì (Traditional Horse Training Skill), Quzi Opera, and Shichuan Lantern Festival are provincial-level; and dryland sand-pressing technology, Lanzhou folk songs, and Gaolan Diguaizi (a folk dance) are municipal-level.

  • Land and Mineral Resources: It is rich in land resources and mineral resources, including metal ores such as gold, silver, zinc, and copper, as well as non-metallic ores such as marble, granite, and clay, all with great mining value.
  • Tourism Resources: It is home to Shichuan Ancient Pear Garden, a national 4A-level scenic spot. With nearly 10,000 ancient pear trees over 100 years old, it is certified by Guinness as the "World’s Largest Ancient Pear Garden" and listed as one of China’s "First Batch of Important Agricultural Cultural Heritage".
  • Tourism Honors: The county has successfully established itself as a Gansu Provincial Rural Tourism Demonstration County. Shichuan Town was selected as one of the national first batch of sports and leisure characteristic towns and a provincial-level tourism demonstration town; Changpo Village and Shangche Village were rated as provincial-level rural tourism demonstration villages.

  • Water Conservancy: The Yellow River flows through the southern part of the county. Three major water conservancy projects — Yindarenqin Water Diversion Project, Xicha Electric Irrigation Project, and Dashagou Electric Irrigation Project — cover the entire county.
  • Energy and Utilities: The power grid operates stably, with the 230,000-kilowatt Xiaoxia Hydropower Station and 6 substations (330kV, 220kV, 110kV). Safe drinking water pipelines and urban sewage pipelines cover the whole area, with a 100% drinking water safety rate and 100% centralized treatment rate of urban garbage and sewage.
  • Information and Transportation: Gigabit optical fiber network covers major urban areas, and 5G network covers over 85% of administrative villages. The county has been awarded the title of National Model County for Integrated Urban-Rural Transportation.

  • Science and Technology: Vigorously implementing the "Strengthening Science and Technology" initiative, the county has 13 high-tech enterprises, 1 provincial engineering laboratory, 1 provincial enterprise technology center, and 10 provincial science and technology innovative enterprises.

Focusing on the "agriculture-prioritized" development orientation and taking urban modern agriculture as the main line, the county has formed three industrial clusters: northern grain, oil, and animal husbandry cluster, central integrated breeding-processing cluster, and southern leisure ecological agriculture cluster.
Key industrial parks include the Shidong Town Yangwayao East-West Cooperation Vegetable Industrial Park, Heishi Agro-Pastoral Composite Beef Cattle Breeding Circular Industrial Park, Shichuan Provincial Melon and Vegetable Modern Agricultural Industrial Park, and Shuifu Protected Agriculture Industrial Park.
With "Party branch-led cooperatives" as an important starting point, the county has formulated and implemented the Trial Measures for Awarding and Subsidizing Characteristic Industries in Gaolan County, promoting the continuous growth of characteristic agricultural industries.

  • "Shichuan Ruan’er Pear" was rated as a national "One Village, One Product" characteristic industry and won the gold medal at the 2018 China Brand Trademark Expo.

Based on the "industry-led" development orientation, the county has implemented the "Strengthening Industry" initiative, constructing a number of high-tech and circular economy projects such as Changzheng Machinery, Fanzhi Pharmaceutical, and Charoen Pokphand Feed. A new industrial development pattern has initially taken shape, with pillars including metallurgical casting, chemical industry, equipment manufacturing, agricultural product processing, and biomedicine.
  • There are 92 industrial enterprises in the county, including 31 designated-size industrial enterprises and 12 enterprises with an output value exceeding 100 million yuan.
  • Lanxin Iron and Steel has an output value exceeding 1 billion yuan, ranking 2nd among Gansu’s private enterprises and winning the 8th Gansu Provincial People’s Government Quality Award.
  • Promoting the high-end, intelligent, and green development of the "6+X" advanced manufacturing industrial cluster: Lanzhou Charoen Pokphand Co., Ltd. was recognized as a national-level green factory; Gansu Fanzhi Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. as a provincial-level green factory; and Outai Building Materials Industrial Park Co., Ltd. and Jinqidun as 2024 provincial-level specialized, refined, distinctive, and innovative small and medium-sized enterprises.

Efficient and Convenient Commerce and Logistics

  • Modern Logistics: Vigorously developing modern logistics, the county has introduced and implemented two large-scale commercial and logistics projects: Feng’en Modern Logistics Park and Wuchan Group Railway-Highway Comprehensive Logistics Park.
  • Commercial Clusters: Five comprehensive commercial clusters (including Huijin Shopping Plaza, Zhongbao Old Street, and Yijia Shangjie) and eight farmers’ markets (including Chengnan, Sanchuankou, and Niwan) have been built. There are 30 designated-size commercial enterprises in the county.
  • E-Commerce: Accelerating the development of e-commerce, the county has built 1 county-level e-commerce public service center, 4 town-level e-commerce service stations, and 38 village-level e-commerce service points, realizing full coverage of the county-town-village three-level e-commerce service network. It has been listed as a national comprehensive demonstration county for e-commerce in rural areas and a national digital village pilot county.

Remarkable Achievements in Park Construction

On December 9, 2024, the Gansu Provincial People’s Government issued the Reply on Approving the Optimal Adjustment of 21 Provincial-Level Development Zones including Yongdeng Industrial Concentration Zone (Gan Zheng Han〔2024〕No. 138), agreeing to integrate Gaolan Sanchuankou Industrial Park with Heishi Industrial Park.
The integrated park adopts a "1+2" spatial structure, with Sanchuankou Area as the core and Heishi Lanxin Area and 1,057-mu Area as sub-areas. After adjustment, the park has a clearer functional positioning and more distinctive industrial structure, covering a total area of about 14.18 square kilometers. Its leading industries are adjusted to ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing, general equipment manufacturing, and agricultural and sideline food processing, with infrastructure basically meeting the "Seven Connections and One Leveling" standard.
In 2024, the Sanchuankou Park achieved a total economic output of 2.73 billion yuan, fixed asset investment of 721 million yuan, total industrial output value of 13.79 billion yuan, and tax revenue of 273 million yuan.

  • Education: There are 39 primary and secondary schools and kindergartens in the county, with 12,700 students. Preschool education and senior high school education are basically popularized, with a 100% enrollment rate and consolidation rate for compulsory education.
