Zhenning Bouyei and Miao Autonomous County is located in the southwestern part of Anshun City, bordering Liuzhi Special Zone of Liupanshui City and Wangmo and Zhenfeng Counties of Qianxinan Prefecture. It is renowned as the ‘Silver City’ and ‘Waterfall Town,’ with the Huangguoshu and Longgong National 5A-rated tourist attractions nearby. It is the only autonomous county in Guizhou Province included in the Guiyang Urban Economic Circle and also the hometown of Ren Zhengfei, the founder of Huawei Group. The county covers a total area of 1,717.29 square kilometres, comprising 5 sub-districts, 7 towns, 3 townships, and 204 administrative villages (communities). As of the end of 2024, the registered population was 409,400, and the permanent resident population was 288,200. The county is home to 29 ethnic groups, including the Han, Bouyei, Miao, and Gelao.

In recent years, under the strong leadership of the Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government, the Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, Zhenning has united as one, upholding the spirit of ‘dare to pioneer and innovate, dare to be the first,’ and has been awarded numerous honours, including ‘Model County for Safe China Construction,’ ‘Pilot County for Deepening County-Level Infrastructure Investment and Financing System Reform by the National Development and Reform Commission,’ ‘National Model County for E-commerce in Rural Areas,’ ‘National Hygienic County,’ ‘Top 100 Counties with Potential for County-Level Tourism Development in China,’ ‘Provincial Civilised City,’ ‘Provincial Hygienic County,’ and ‘Provincial Model County for Military-Civilian Unity.’ It has established the first provincial-level garden county in the province and ranked first in the 2020 Guizhou Province Financial Ecological Environment Evaluation for counties and districts. It has also established a number of industrial brands, including stone, fine chemicals, special light industry, and premium fruits.

Resource endowments

Zhenning is blessed with beautiful mountains and rivers and abundant resources. The county features prominent karst topography, with diverse cave systems, underground rivers, waterfalls, lakes, springs, and abundant geothermal resources, earning it the title of ‘Karst Kingdom.’ Zhenning's cherry, honey plum, wax printing, and embroidery products, which have obtained national geographical indication certifications, are renowned worldwide. The county has identified mineral resources including antimony, lead-zinc, iron, manganese ore, barite, marble, calcite, limestone, clay, and coal. Among these, barite reserves amount to 33.03 million tonnes, marble to 30 million cubic metres, coal to 1 billion tonnes, dolomite to 500 million tonnes, antimony ore to 500,000 tonnes, and 44,000 tonnes of lead-zinc-mercury ore. The barite ore is of high quality, shallowly buried, and has favourable mining conditions, making it a rare barite mineral resource in China with significant mining value. Additionally, limestone, sand mines, and stone slabs are distributed across more than 60% of the county.

Zhenning's regional advantages include convenient transportation: 70 minutes to Guiyang Longdongbao Airport, 24 minutes to Anshun Huangguoshu Airport, and 10 minutes to the high-speed rail Anshun West Station. Within a 3-hour economic circle, it connects to Guangzhou, Changsha, Nanning, Kunming, Chongqing, and Chengdu, with a comprehensive transportation network integrating railways, highways, waterways, and aviation. It is home to Guizhou's closest seaport to the sea—Bacao Port—and is traversed by the Guiyang-Kunming, Guiyang-Guangzhou High-Speed Railway; the Shanghai-Kunming, Huixing, and Duxiang expressways run east-west and north-south (with 9 expressway exits).

Located at the centre of Guizhou's western tourism golden route, between the Huangguoshu and Longgong 5A-rated national scenic areas, it administers the Yelang Cave and the thousand-year-old Bouyei ethnic village Gaodang, both national 4A-rated scenic areas. One of the seven demonstration counties prioritised for tourism development in the province and a tourism product production base.

The only ethnic autonomous county within the Guiyang Urban Economic Circle. It serves as a strategic stronghold at the ‘heart of Guizhou and the gateway to Yunnan,’ offering the perfect destination for admiring world-renowned waterfalls, exploring minority cultures, and enjoying sightseeing, leisure, and summer retreat tourism. As a central node region within the Qianzhong Economic Zone, Zhenning offers convenient access to Yunnan, Guangxi, and Guangdong to the west and south, and to Chongqing, Sichuan, and Hunan to the east and north. It is situated at the intersection of the ASEAN Free Trade Zone, the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region, and the South Guizhou-Kunming Economic Circle, and serves as an important radiation zone for the Pearl River Delta. It also functions as a key economic platform for the sequential transfer of industries between the Hong Kong-Macao region and the Vietnam-Laos-Myanmar region.
