Ziyun Autonomous County is the only Miao and Bouyei Autonomous County in China, located in the southwestern part of Guizhou Province. It serves as a strategic gateway connecting Guizhou and southwestern regions to Guangxi and an important maritime通道. Situated in the southwestern part of Guizhou Province and the southern part of Anshun City, it is under the jurisdiction of Anshun City. To the east, it borders Changshun County and Luodian County of Qiannan Prefecture, to the south it borders Wangmo County of Qianxinan Prefecture, to the west it borders Zhenning Autonomous County of Anshun City, and to the north it borders Xixiu District of Anshun City. The county covers an area of 2,251 square kilometres, comprising 13 towns (sub-districts), 162 administrative villages, 13 community residents' committees, and 2,050 village groups. As of the end of 2024, the registered population was 416,400, and the permanent resident population was 286,500. Ziyun is named after the ‘Ziyun Cave’ to the west of the county seat. The unique karst topography within the county has created the神奇秀美的格凸河. Ziyun has a rich historical and cultural heritage, with records of its establishment dating back nearly 1,400 years. ‘Purple mist rises in the east, clouds and mist gather in the west’ is the most apt description of Ziyun. It has a subtropical monsoon humid climate, with mild and pleasant weather, abundant rainfall, distinct seasons, and clear dry and wet periods. Winters are mild, and summers are not excessively hot.

Ziyun has an advantageous transportation location. Ziyun is part of the one-hour economic circle connecting Guiyang and Anshun. With the construction of the Huangtong to Baise railway underway, Ziyun will become the county closest to the Beibu Gulf Economic Zone in the city, opening up a smooth channel for the flow of industrial and development resources to and from the sea. It possesses the conditions to ‘build a regional central city and a charming, liveable, and tourist-friendly slow-paced small city,’ and to serve as the ‘bridgehead’ linking Anshun to the Bay Area economy and a logistics hub for regional central cities.

Ziyun boasts an excellent ecological environment. With a forest coverage rate of 68.63% and over 20,000 negative oxygen ions per cubic centimetre of air, the county offers pristine air quality, making it a natural ‘oxygen bar’ for cleansing the mind and body. Rivers crisscross the county, with a high proportion of water bodies meeting excellent quality standards, endowing Ziyun with the natural endowments and competitive advantages to develop a health and wellness tourism demonstration zone and lead the way in green development and the green economy.

Ziyun possesses abundant natural resources. It is abundant in stone resources, with proven reserves of decorative limestone totaling 117,456,938 tons. The soil primarily consists of seven types: zonal yellow soil, non-zonal limestone soil, paddy soil, mountainous yellow-brown soil, alluvial soil, purple soil, and red soil. The suitable temperature, humidity, and soil conditions provide excellent natural conditions for developing industries such as red-fleshed sweet potatoes, blueberries, and tea. The county features the AAAA-rated tourist attraction Gedu River and the AAA-rated tourist attraction Tonghe, as well as the largest artificial lake in Anshun City—Huangjiawan Reservoir. The county boasts a rich and vibrant ethnic and folk culture. The Miao ethnic group's epic poem ‘The Legend of Yalu Wang’ was listed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as one of the major cultural discoveries of China in 2009. Domestic and international tourists refer to the area as the ‘Mysterious Hometown of Yalu’ and the ‘International Rock Climbing Paradise.’
