Yuping is named for its jade-like flowing waters and mountain ranges resembling screens. Located in the eastern part of Guizhou Province, it is under the jurisdiction of Tongren City. It borders Xinhuang Dong Autonomous County of Hunan Province to the southeast, Zhenyuan County and Cengong County of Qiandongnan Prefecture to the southwest, and Wanshan District of Tongren City to the northwest. Situated at the transition zone between the Yungui Plateau and the Xiangxi Hills, it is known as the “Throat of Guizhou and Hunan” and the " Gateway to Eastern Guizhou.“ The county covers an area of 523.78 square kilometers, comprising 1 township, 3 towns, and 4 sub-districts, with a permanent population of 200,000. It is one of the five Dong Autonomous Counties in China and the only one in Guizhou Province, renowned as the ”Hometown of Chinese Flutes and Dances,“ ”Hometown of Chinese Tea Oil,“ ”Hometown of Dong Ethnic Culture and Arts,“ and ”Hometown of Chinese Yellow Peaches."
Yuping enjoys a superior geographical location and serves as the convenient transportation hub of the eastern gateway to Guizhou. As the eastern gateway of Guizhou, Yuping was the first county in Tongren to have railway access. It serves as the “bridgehead” of Guizhou's “Eastern Link” development strategy and is a key transportation artery connecting the Central South and Southwest regions. The Shanghai-Kunming High-Speed Railway, Tongren-Yuping Intercity Railway, Zhuzhou-Liuzhou Double-Track Railway, Shanghai-Kunming Expressway, Tongren-Dali Expressway, National Highway 320, and Provincial Highway 201 all pass through the county, connecting to Hunan and Hubei to the east, Yunnan and Guizhou to the west, Guangdong and Guangxi to the south, and Sichuan and Chongqing to the north. It takes 60 minutes by car to reach Fenghuang and Zhi Jiang airports, and 1 hour by high-speed railway to reach Guiyang, and 2 hours to reach Changsha. The county has 100% rural bus coverage, ensuring seamless connectivity between urban and rural areas. The integrated development of urban and rural road passenger transport has reached a 5A-level standard.
Yuping is a hub of cultural heritage and a renowned city of flutes and pipes. Yuping was formerly known as Pingxi. During the Song Dynasty, Pingxi Dong was established. In the 23rd year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1390), Pingxi Wei was established. In the 5th year of the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty (1727), it was renamed Yuping County. In 1984, Yuping County was dissolved, and Yuping Dong Autonomous County was established. In the third year of the Zhengde reign of the Ming Dynasty (1508), the Neo-Confucian master Wang Yangming wrote his first poem upon entering Guizhou in Yuping: “There will come a day when I can retire to the fields, but how can a humble official repay the emperor's grace?” From here emerged Hou Wei, the first jinshi (imperial examination graduate) from eastern Guizhou, and Duan Yucai, a master of philology, who once served as the magistrate of Yuping. The Yinshan Academy, founded in 1827, is the best-preserved ancient academy in the province. Over a century, the academy has nurtured Yuping's fine tradition of valuing education and literature. Immortals linger in Yuping to preserve ancient melodies, and guests from overseas come to seek kindred spirits. Yuping's flutes and pipes have a long history, having been imperial tributes during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In 1915, they won a gold medal at the San Francisco World's Fair, and alongside Maotai wine and Dafang lacquerware, they are known as the “Three Treasures of Guizhou.” Their craftsmanship has been listed as part of the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage. The original musical “Ping Xiao Yu Di” was selected for the Second National Excellent Musical and has been performed in many places across the province and beyond, significantly enhancing the city's reputation as the “Capital of Flutes and Pipes · Dong Listening to Yuping.”
Yuping is a picturesque and eco-friendly destination, offering a harmonious living environment. The region is rich in natural resources, with a well-preserved ecological system, mild winters, and cool summers, boasting a forest coverage rate of 55.9%. The Yanyang River, which flows through Yuping, has played a significant role in the region's history. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it served as a vital waterway for grain transportation between Guizhou and Hubei provinces, with water quality consistently meeting Class II standards or higher. The national AAAA-level tourist attraction Dongxiang Folk Culture Park and the national AAA-level tourist attraction Tea Flower Spring lead the way, with agriculture, culture, and tourism seamlessly integrated. Villages such as Guojiawan Village, a “National Beautiful and Leisurely Village,” Wengyang Village, a “National Civilized Village,” and Tianping Village, a “National Tourism Key Village,” each have their unique charm, with picturesque rural landscapes. The vast tea gardens and expansive peach blossom fields are truly captivating. The Dong-style drum towers are simple yet elegant, the Seven-Eyed Ancient Bridge spans the water like a rainbow, and the wind-and-rain bridges echo with the melodious sounds of flutes and pipes. The Train Bookstore is filled with the aroma of books. A fold of green mountains like a screen, a bend of clear water like a flute, together form an ecologically livable, climate-friendly, and scenic new city on the Guizhou border. It has been designated as a national pilot county for new-type urbanization and named a garden county in Guizhou Province.
Yuping is open and inclusive, making it a prime destination for investment and business development. Yuping is advancing its development strategy of “East Industry, West Trade, South City, North Production,” promoting integrated development with the Dalong Economic Development Zone. The development定位 of the New Functional Materials Extension Zone has provided Yuping with a head start in seizing policy opportunities. The development level of the oil tea industry chain ranks among the top in the province, and it has been designated as the National Yuping Oil Tea Industry Demonstration Zone and the National Agricultural and Rural Industrial Integration Demonstration Zone. Guojiawan Imperial Rice and Yuping Yellow Peaches have been awarded the National Agricultural Product Geographical Indication. The province's edible fungus industry demonstration base has been established, and Gui Fu Mushroom Industry has become the largest factory-based edible fungus production enterprise in Southwest China. Yuping has been designated as one of the 30 key counties for edible fungus cultivation in the province. It has been honored with over 20 national and provincial titles, including “China's Model County for Good Grains and Oils” and “National Model City for Circular Economy.” By creating a favorable environment, it has attracted investment. Yuping is a city of gratitude and progress, known for its pragmatic and forward-thinking approach. On January 31, 2008, Guizhou Province suffered a severe ice storm. At the time, Xi Jinping, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Secretary of the Central Secretariat, braved the ice and snow to inspect the disaster situation in Yafu Township, Yuping Autonomous County, comfort the affected residents, and encourage them to work together to overcome the disaster and resume production. Yuping has always remembered the instructions, remained grateful, and strived forward. In accordance with President Xi Jinping's important speeches during his inspection of Guizhou and his important instructions and directives on Guizhou and Tongren's work, Yuping has focused on its main strategy and positioning, closely aligned with the municipal party committee's strategic layout and the county party committee's “three zones, one county, and one center” development goals, overcome difficulties, taken on responsibilities, and worked diligently, making solid strides in modernization efforts.
