It administers 19 towns (sub-districts) and 315 administrative villages (communities), with a total population of 460,000. It is a national key ecological function zone, a national ecological protection and construction demonstration county, a national ecological civilization construction demonstration project pilot county, and a multi-ethnic residential area.
Shiquan has a long history and rich cultural heritage. In the 28th year of Emperor Qin Shi Huang's reign (219 BCE), Yelang County was established. In the 11th year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty (1413 CE), Guizhou Province was established, and Shiquan Prefecture was set up. In 1914, the prefecture was renamed as a county. Here, Jingchu culture and Bashu culture coexist harmoniously, Yelang culture and ethnic culture complement each other, and hot spring culture and moss tea culture enhance each other, giving rise to one world-class intangible cultural heritage, three national-level intangible cultural heritages, and 11 provincial-level intangible cultural heritages.
Shiquan is rich in resources and has enormous development potential. It possesses three major resources: hot springs, moss tea, and stone materials. Shiqian's hot springs are rich in various trace elements, meeting both international standards for drinking water and medical use, making them a rare geothermal resource unique in China. Shiqian moss tea has a long history, unique flavor, and rich aroma, and is a nationally protected geographical indication product. It is one of Guizhou's three famous teas, and Premier Zhou Enlai once inscribed the words “The future of tea production is boundless” for Shiqian moss tea. Shiqian's stone resources are abundant in quantity and quality, with over ten stone varieties meeting the A-class standards for decorative materials. The China Stone Association has awarded Shiqian the title of “China Stone Industry Base.”
Shiqian boasts a unique brand identity with strong development potential. It has been honored with 14 national-level titles, including “National Hot Spring Cluster Scenic Area,” China's Hot Spring Hometown,“ ”China's Mineral Water Hometown,“ ”China's Moss Tea Hometown,“ ”China's Longevity Hometown,“ ”China's Fragrant Fruit Tree Hometown,“ and ”China's Best Leisure Tourism Destination," among 14 other national-level brands. With the intersection of the Anjiang Expressway and the Sijian Expressway, the journey from Shiqian to the provincial capital Guiyang takes only 2.5 hours, and to Tongren just 1.5 hours. the Shiquan-Yuping and Shiquan-Meitan expressways have been successfully completed and put into operation, further highlighting Shiquan's role as a key transportation hub in eastern Guizhou.
In recent years, Shiquan County has consistently adhered to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, fully implementing the decisions and plans of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the work requirements of the provincial and municipal governments. Focusing on the goal of "Hot Spring City · Longevity Shiqian,“ it has overcome multiple challenges such as sustained economic downturn, tightened macroeconomic policies, and severe impacts from the pandemic. By focusing on developing its natural resources—mountains, water, tea, tourism, stone, and urban areas—and advancing the construction of the ”Three Areas and One Hub" (an international leisure tourism and wellness destination, a national-level green ecological industrial base, a model area for rural revitalization in the Wuling Mountain Region, and a key three-dimensional transportation hub in eastern Guizhou), Shiqian has driven high-quality socio-economic development, with its comprehensive strength steadily improving. The urban and rural landscapes are undergoing rapid transformation, reform and opening-up are being deepened, people's well-being is continuously improving, poverty alleviation has achieved comprehensive victory, and all undertakings are advancing in strides.
