Dejiang County is located in the northeastern part of Guizhou Province, in the western part of Tongren City. It covers an area of 2,072 square kilometers and administers 11 towns, 8 townships, 3 subdistricts, and 1 provincial-level economic development zone, with a total population of 560,000. The built-up area of the county seat covers 25.5 square kilometers, with a permanent urban population of 230,000 and an urbanization rate of 56.18%.
Dejiang has a rich history and culture. As early as the Sui and Tang dynasties, it was known as Fuyang County. During the Yuan Dynasty, in the 15th year of the Zhi Yuan era, it was renamed Shuiti Jiangzhang Office. During the Ming Dynasty, in the 33rd year of the Wanli era, it was renamed Anhua County. In 1914 (the 3rd year of the Republic of China), it was renamed Dejiang County. The county preserves 128 historical sites, including the former seat of Yongzhou Prefecture from the Sui Dynasty. Notable figures from Dejiang include Tian Qiu, a pioneer of education in Guizhou, and Wang Sanji, a Qing Dynasty official who served as the magistrate of Chenzhou. In June 1934, He Long led the Red Third Army to establish the Qiandong Revolutionary Base in Fengxiangxi, sowing the seeds of revolution; the Communist Party of China's Qianbei Working Committee made significant contributions to the liberation of Guizhou. Dejiang is known as the “Hometown of Nüxi,” with Nüxi theater hailed as the “living fossil of Chinese drama,” and both Nüxi and Dejiang Dragon Blasting have been listed as national-level intangible cultural heritage.
Dejiang is a regional hub. Located at the geometric center of the triangle formed by the territories of Zunyi, Tongren, and Qiangjiang, it serves as the central hub of the northeastern Guizhou region, connecting and radiating influence over four counties in the northeastern part of Zunyi, five counties in the northwestern part of Tongren, and three counties in the southeastern part of Chongqing, covering a land area of 30,900 square kilometers and a population of 6.97 million. The provincial “14th Five-Year Plan” designates Dejiang as an important regional hub city, and the municipal Party committee and government have designated our county as a sub-central city within the municipal area. It is home to three higher education institutions: Tongren University Wujiang College, Guizhou Engineering Vocational College, and Guizhou Intelligent Engineering Technician College, making it one of the few counties in the province and the only one in northeastern Guizhou with higher education institutions. It also has one tertiary-level general hospital, one tertiary-level traditional Chinese medicine hospital, and one secondary-level maternal and child health hospital.
Dejiang is a transportation hub. In 2015, with the approval of the State Council and the formal endorsement of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Dejiang was designated as a regional transportation hub city in northeastern Guizhou. Currently, the Tongren Dejiang Airport is being vigorously developed; Four expressways—Hangrui, Dewu, Deyan, and Deyu—pass through the county, and the Wujiang Gonghe Port, with a capacity of 5 million tons, is navigable. According to national and provincial plans, the Zhaoquan-Guizhou Railway, the Fuling-Liuzhou Railway, and the Guiyang-Zhengzhou High-Speed Railway will intersect in Dejiang, forming an integrated transportation network of water, land, and air. Dejiang is poised to become a transportation hub connecting the central Guizhou region, integrating into the Chengdu-Chongqing economic zone, linking the Wuling region, and radiating influence to surrounding areas.
Dejiang is an agricultural county. As a traditional agricultural county, it has been awarded the titles of “China's Green Ecological Tianma Hometown” and “National Standardized Demonstration Zone for Sichuan Pepper Cultivation,” and is one of the top ten counties in the province for beef cattle development. Dejiang Tianma has been granted national geographical indication product protection, and “Dejiang Revival Pig” is a geographical indication product recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. Currently, the county has a beef cattle inventory of 185,800 head, with a cumulative ginseng cultivation area of 1 million square meters and an effective management area of 200,000 mu for Sichuan pepper.
Dejiang is an ecologically significant area. The county has good natural ecology, with the Wujiang River flowing through five townships over a distance of 47 kilometers, and total available water resources amounting to 486 million cubic meters. The forest coverage rate is 63.57%, and it is a National Hygienic County, a Provincial Forest City, and a Civilized City. It is also an important node city in the Wujiang Ecological and Economic Integration Zone being developed by the municipal government.
