Songtao Miao Autonomous County was approved and established by the State Council in 1956 as one of the five Miao autonomous counties in the country. It is located in the northeast of Guizhou Province, at the foot of Mount Fanjing, at the junction of two provinces and one city in Guizhou, Hunan and Chongqing, and is known as the "Gates to Northeast Guizhou" and the "Three Provinces Can Be Heard". The county governs 5 streets, 6 towns and 17 townships, covering an area of 3,409 square kilometers, with a total population of 740,000, of which 68.1% of the population is made up of 26 ethnic minorities, including the Miao ethnic group. It is a "National Model County for Ethnic Unity and Progress", a "National Advanced County for Social Harmony and Peace", a "National Key County for Rural Revitalization", a "National Sanitary County", a "Provincial Civilized County" and a "Guanzhong Province Garden County".

Tongdao District enjoys a unique location and convenient transportation.It is a bridgehead connecting the greater southwest with the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta, and is the intersection of the 4-hour economic circles of Chongqing, Changsha, and Guiyang. With the completion and operation of a series of regional major transportation infrastructure projects, such as the renovation and expansion of Tongren Phoenix Airport, the construction of Hunan Xiangxi Airport, the Shanghai-Kunming High-speed Railway, the Tongji High-speed Railway, the复line of the Yचwai Railway, and the Yчxiang, Baochengao, Hangruiyue, Songcong, and Yuanyny Song highways, Tongdao's three-dimensional transportation network, which integrates highways, railways, high-speed railways, and aviation, is continuously optimized and upgraded.

Songtao's folk customs are simple and its culture is unique.There is the Miao Nuo Opera, known as the "living fossil of drama" by the cultural circles, the breathtaking "climbing the knife ladder" and "going through the fire" Miao skills, the passionate and unrestrained Miao Huagu dance, the majestic and powerful rolling dragon art, especially the Miao skills and Miao embroidery are famous at home and abroad. The Miao embroidery series products, including the Huagu series products, are designated as diplomatic supplies by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country, and the Pigeon Flower series products are designated as peace gifts by the United Nations. The Ba Dihong萨滚 and Songtao Miao embroidery in Songtao Autonomous County have successfully been included in the National Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and have been successively named "Guizhou Huagu Art Hometown", "China Rolling Dragon Art Hometown", "China Folk Art Culture Hometown", "China Folk Skills Art Culture Hometown" and so on.

Pengtao Mountain is beautiful and the climate is pleasant.The forest coverage rate of the whole county reaches 63.43%, belonging to the subtropical monsoon climate, with distinct seasons, no severe cold in winter, no extreme heat in summer, sufficient rainfall and abundant heat. There are many scenic spots in the county, such as Fanjing Mountain, which is listed as a member of the "Man and Biosphere" protection network by the United Nations, the ancient battlefield site of the Southern Great Wall with a long history in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the city of Miao Wang, which is known as the first city of the thousand-mile Miao border, the Peach Blossom Spring, which is praised as the "Oxygen Capital of the East", the "Miao Wang Underground Palace" Qianlong Cave, which is known as the "Underground Guilin" and one of the top ten karst wonders in China, the Laer Mountain Red Stone Forest scenic area of the Chinese Red Stone Geopark, the unique Danxia landform, and the ancient悬棺 site of Yunluo Tun from the Western Jin Dynasty.

Tongdao is rich in resources and has a wealth of natural treasures.More than 20 kinds of mineral resources with development value have been explored in the county, including manganese ore, silicon ore, lead and zinc ore, vanadium ore, marble, phosphate ore, and stone coal. Among them, the explored reserves of manganese ore reach 732 million tons, with a potential reserve of more than 1 billion tons, accounting for one quarter of the national reserves, ranking first in Asia and third in the world. It is known as the "Manganese Capital". The explored reserves of shale gas are more than 1 trillion cubic meters, and the development prospects are very broad. The agricultural production conditions are unique, with a total cultivated land area of 1.102 million mu in the county, making it a "National Advanced County for Grain Production", a "National Base County for High-Quality Peanuts", and a "National Science and Technology Demonstration County for Tea Industry System", etc.

Tongtai is developing rapidly and momentum is strong.Under the strong leadership of the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, and with the solid guidance of the provincial and municipal Party committees and governments, the whole county is closely united around the main strategy and main positioning, coordinating the work of stabilizing growth, promoting reform, adjusting structure, benefiting people's livelihood, and preventing risks, and the overall economic and social development is showing a good trend of stability, progress, quality improvement, and improvement in people's livelihood. In 2023, the county's GDP was 19.649 billion yuan, an increase of 4.5% year-on-year; the general public budget revenue (at the local level) was 5.58 billion yuan, an increase of 19.5% year-on-year; and the per capita disposable income of urban and rural residents increased by 4.4% and 8.9%, respectively.
