Rongjiang County is located in the southeastern part of Guizhou Province, at the watershed between the Pearl River and Yangtze River systems. It is situated at the central junction of Hunan, Guizhou, and Guangxi provinces (autonomous regions), and is known as the “gateway to southeastern Guizhou and the most important region of the Miao ethnic group.” The county covers an area of 3,316 square kilometers, comprising 20 towns (sub-districts) and 250 administrative villages (communities), with a total population of 385,000. Among them, ethnic minorities such as the Miao, Dong, Shui, and Yao account for 83.9% of the total population. Rongjiang was once a national key county for poverty alleviation and development. By the end of 2020, the entire county had achieved poverty alleviation and was removed from the poverty list. It is now a national key county for rural revitalization support. Rongjiang has a long history and rich cultural heritage, being one of the “Eight Hundred States of Jiangnan” and designated as a red revolutionary base area. During the Five Emperors period, it was part of the Sanmiao barbarian region;


 during the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, it was part of the Jingliang region; during the Spring and Autumn period, it was part of the Chu Kingdom; during the Warring States period, it was established as Wujian County, belonging to the Zangke Commandery of the Nanyang Kingdom of the Southern Yi; during the Qin Dynasty, it belonged to the Qianzhong Commandery; during the Han Dynasty to the Southern Dynasties, it belonged to the Wuling Commandery; during the Sui Dynasty, it belonged to the Longbiao County of the Yuanling Commandery; during the Tang Dynasty, it belonged to the Yingzhou Prefecture under the Lingnan Circuit of the Qianzhou Military Governorate, later transferred to the Qianzhong Circuit; During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, it belonged to the territory of Cheng Prefecture of the Chu Kingdom; during the Song Dynasty, it was under the jurisdiction of the governor of Cheng Prefecture; during the reign of Emperor Zhenzong, Gu Prefecture was established, with the title of a vassal governor, under the jurisdiction of the Guangnan West Road Qingyuan Prefecture Duyun Consolation Office; during the Yuan Dynasty, the Gu Prefecture Ba Wan Cave General Administration Office was established, under the jurisdiction of the Sichuan Province Shunyan Road Sizhou Consolation Office; Later, the Gu Zhou Ba Wan Military and Civilian General Administration Office was abolished, and the county was placed under the jurisdiction of the Shang Liping Military and Civilian Chief Administration Office, under the Huguang Provincial Administration's Sizhou Xuanwei Office; During the Ming Dynasty, Gu Zhou Ba Wan Dong was placed under the jurisdiction of the newly established Liping Prefecture, under the Guizhou Provincial Administration; Later, the Gu Zhou Garrison was established, under the Hunan Provincial Military Command; During the Qing Dynasty, the Gu Zhou Hall was established under the Liping Prefecture. In 1913, the prefecture was renamed a county. The county was named for its numerous ancient banyan trees and its location at the confluence of the Duliujiang, Zhaigao River, and Pingyong River. Rongjiang has a rich red cultural heritage. In late April 1930, the Red Seventh Army captured Rongjiang City, marking the first victory of the Communist Party-led forces in Guizhou, the first liberation of a county seat in Guizhou, and the first celebration of International Labor Day in Guizhou. The Red Seventh Army Historical Exhibition Hall has been designated as a national patriotic education base. The Red Army and the People's Liberation Army passed through Rongjiang six times. During the Long March, the Central Red Army passed through Langdong Town, leaving behind precious red gene heritage on this fertile land. Rongjiang has a long-standing Zhuge culture. According to the “Guizhou General Gazetteer: Qianzhong Waterways Survey,” “The county seat (the ancient county seat city) was formerly known as Zhuge Camp.” The county still preserves sites such as “Zhuge Tai,” “Zhuge Dong,” Wolong Hill,“ ”Kongming Mountain,“ and ”Kongming Pond." Rongjiang has a unique climate and excellent ecological environment. It is a national key ecological function zone, a pilot county for the national soil and water conservation engineering construction incentive program, an advanced county in the national village cleanup campaign, a provincial ecological civilization construction demonstration zone, a county that has achieved the standards for water-saving society construction in Guizhou Province, and one of the top ten forestry counties in Guizhou Province. The climate is suitable, with an annual average temperature of 20.3°C, 99.5% of days with good air quality, and 100% compliance with drinking water quality standards. There are 1,877 species of wild plants and 324 species of wild animals, with a forest coverage rate of 74.18%, ranking third in the province and first in the prefecture. The county has high levels of negative oxygen ions, with most areas recording values above 3,000 (per cm³), and the Leigong Mountain area reaching approximately 5,000 (per cm³). It is home to the “National Forest Health Resort Base” Pingyang Xiaodanjiang and the “Village Super” First Drift Health Resort Maoren River, earning it the reputation of a “natural air conditioner” and “natural oxygen bar.” Rongjiang County is rich in ethnic diversity and tourism resources, and is one of the first national pilot counties for cultural industry empowerment in rural revitalization, one of the top 100 counties with potential for county-level tourism development, one of the first national pilot regions for common modernization, the location of the standard pronunciation of the Dong language, a national model county for cultural advancement, one of the top 100 cultural counties in China, and a new model for cultural and tourism development in western China in 2023. The Rongjiang County People's Government has been awarded the title of “National Model Collective for Ethnic Unity and Progress.” Rongjiang County has been recognized as a provincial-level civilized city, a provincial-level model county for ethnic unity and progress, a priority development zone for tourism in Guizhou Province, and a provincial-level nighttime cultural and tourism consumption cluster zone. It boasts 12 national-level intangible cultural heritage items, including the Dong Grand Song (a UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage), Dong Pipapo Songs, the unique Miao King Temple and Miao King Tomb, the renowned Sanbao Dong Village, the mysterious Yangkai Miao Village, 29 traditional Chinese villages, and 19 ethnic特色 villages (six of which are national-level). There are 25 ethnic folk festivals annually, earning it the titles of “China's Folk Culture and Art Homeland,” “Land of a Hundred Festivals,” and “Cultural Thousand Islands.” It features the Leili Dong Township 4A-rated scenic area and three 3A-rated tourist attractions, and has developed popular homestay spots such as Dong Tianjing, Yueyang Mountain Residence, and Bula Danjiang, earning the reputation of “rich in ethnic charm, pristine and untouched, every trace steeped in history, and uniquely scenic mountains and waters.” Rongjiang is strong in sports and has a vibrant football culture, being a national model county for football, the “Home of Gymnastics in Guizhou,” and a pilot county for sports-education integration in Guizhou Province. It has been selected for the second batch of National Model Counties for Mass Fitness and the first national list of counties for gymnastics development. The Village Super League has become a ‘phenomenal’ event in Chinese rural areas and a new calling card for Guizhou, praised as “a vivid interpretation of China's modernization practice,” “a new form of human civilization,” and a catalyst for rural revitalization.“ President Xi Jinping praised the ”Village Super League“ in his New Year's address in 2024, describing it as ”full of vitality.“ In March 2025, during his inspection tour of Guizhou, President Xi Jinping pointed out: ”These cultural and sports activities, such as the Guizhou Village Super League, are popular among the people. We must strive to improve, nurture, and develop them." The “Village Super League case” was selected as one of the 2023 China Tourism Industry Influence Cases, the first batch of outstanding “Big Three Ball Sports” events for the public, the 2023 and 2024 China Public Relations Excellence Cases, the Top Ten Outstanding Cases in Overseas Communication for 2023, the Best Case in the Fifth Global Poverty Reduction Cases for 2024, the Case Promoting Sustainable Development of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region for 2024, the Outstanding Case in Intellectual Property Information Services for 2024, the 2024 National Outstanding Case of Online Civilization Construction, the National Ethnic Affairs Commission Outstanding Case, and the 2024 National Rural Public Services Typical Case. Selected for inclusion in “Compilation of Practical Cases of Xi Jinping's Cultural Thought (2024)” and “Toward a Sports Powerhouse: The Contemporary Value and Global Implications of Xi Jinping's Important Discourses on Sports,” it was named one of the Top 10 Travel Destinations on Douyin in 2023, listed among the Top 10 Popular Phrases in China in 2023, the Top 10 New Words of 2023, and the Top 10 News Stories on Rural Revitalization. It also ranked among the Top 5 Most Popular Counties for Summer 2024 at the Golden Fox Awards, and the Top 3 Most Sought-After Niche Travel Destinations by Baidu Users in 2024. Rongjiang boasts a vibrant sports culture, having produced world champions such as Liu Rongbing and Long Jianguo, Olympic champion Long Daoyi, and four international-level athletes. Rongjiang is renowned for its fragrant fruits and abundant natural resources, earning it the titles of “Hometown of Premium Watermelons,” China's original ecological Xili Gong rice hometown, a national comprehensive demonstration county for e-commerce in rural areas, a pilot county for the national “Internet+” agricultural products from village to city project, and one of the first batch of national quality-driven county cultivation cities. It has been selected as the third batch of national rural industrial integration demonstration parks and the fourth batch of national agricultural green development pilot zones, and has been awarded the titles of China's Ethnic Ecological Culinary Culture City and Guizhou's Ethnic Culinary Culture Capital. The county vigorously develops its leading industries of “premium fruits and vegetables, and authentic medicinal herbs.” Rongjiang watermelons are renowned throughout the province and have been praised by central leaders after being served at the Zhongnanhai compound on two occasions. Xili Gong rice, Rongjiang small fragrant chickens, Rongjiang arrowroot, and Tashixiang sheep are listed as national geographical indication protected products. Golden passion fruit has an excellent taste, and navel oranges are exported both within and outside the province. Rongjiang lo han fruit brings health and sweetness to the world. The concept of “three new agriculture”—where smartphones become new farming tools, data becomes new agricultural resources, and live streaming becomes new farming activities—has gained widespread acceptance. Rongjiang's specialty dishes, such as Rongjiang rice rolls, beef and lamb soup, grilled fish, pickled fish, and pickled meat, are so delicious that people linger to enjoy them, earning the city the reputation of “the earthly aroma of life, the small Jiangnan of Yunnan and Guizhou.” Rongjiang boasts a superior geographical location and immense development potential. It has been designated as a national model county for “Four Good Rural Roads,” listed as part of the Qianbei Urban Belt, a regional hub city in Guizhou, and a sub-central city in Qiandongnan. It serves as a key node city along the Western Land-Sea New Channel and the first city in Guizhou along the Gui-Guang High-Speed Railway. The Guiyang-Guangzhou High-Speed Railway, Xiamen-Rongjiang Expressway, Lichuan-Rongjiang Expressway, Jianjiang-Rongjiang Expressway, and Leizhou-Rongjiang Expressway traverse the region, enabling access to Guiyang and Guilin within one hour and deep integration into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area's three-hour high-speed railway economic circle. The Rongjiang-Rongjiang Expressway is under construction, while the Leizhou-Rongjiang Expressway, Fuling-Liuzhou Railway, Xinggan Railway, and Duliu River Navigation Channel are included in the planning. Currently, Rongjiang is deeply studying and implementing the important speeches made by President Xi Jinping during his inspection of Guizhou and the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. It is making full use of policy documents such as the New National Development Plan No. 2 and the Implementation Opinions on the Bridgehead Strategy, seizing the opportunity presented by the “Village Super League” to break into the mainstream, and prioritizing high-quality development to guide the overall strategy. Focusing on its main strategic objectives and positioning, it is striving to build itself into a world-class sports tourism destination, a global hub for grassroots football culture, a special zone for rural football in China, a bridgehead for the integration of agriculture, culture, sports, tourism, and commerce between Guizhou Province and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, a winter health and wellness resort “Little Sanya” in Guizhou Province, and a hub for innovative, creative, and entrepreneurial talent, striving to write a new chapter in Rongjiang's high-quality development. In 2024, the county's GDP reached 10.496 billion yuan, making it the third county in the prefecture to surpass the 10 billion yuan mark. In 2024, the county welcomed a total of 9.4618 million visitors, representing a year-on-year increase of 24.36%; tourism revenue reached 10.803 billion yuan, up 28.64% year-on-year. A total of 3,403 new market entities were added. Since the implementation of the village-level collective economy policy, the county has added 6,583 new market entities. The county's village collective economy income increased from 58.9 million yuan in 2022 to 121 million yuan in 2024. Among these, operational income increased from 12.4168 million yuan in 2022 to 51.1728 million yuan in 2024.
