Wong'an County is a county under the jurisdiction of Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, located in the central part of Guizhou Province. It borders Huangping and Yuqing counties to the east, Fuquan City to the south, Kaiyang County to the west, and Meitan County to the north. The county covers an area of 1,974 square kilometers. With a population of 500,000, it is home to ethnic groups including Han, Buyi, Miao, and Gelao, with ethnic minorities accounting for 8.4% of the total population. The county administers 2 subdistricts, 10 towns, and 1 township. The county government is located in Yongyang Subdistrict.

Weng'an County is situated at 27.078472°N, 107.471555°E, along the middle reaches of the Wujiang River in eastern Guizhou Province. It is 125 kilometers west of Guiyang City, 130 kilometers north of Zunyi City, 105 kilometers south of Duyun City (capital of Qiannan Prefecture), and 212 kilometers east of Tongren City. Wengan serves as a key node city in the Qianzhong Economic Zone and is the most convenient transportation hub connecting Chengdu-Chongqing to Guangdong-Guangxi in the south and Yunnan to the Yangtze River Delta in the east.

Located on the second-tier plateau of Guizhou, Wengan lies within the karst hill depression plateau region of northern Guizhou Central, with the Wujiang River traversing its northern part. The terrain slopes from southeast to northwest, featuring gentle central elevations. The highest point, Huazhu Mountain, reaches 1,567 meters above sea level, while the lowest point is Yanjingdu along the Wujiang River at 483 meters. The average elevation is 1,084 meters. The Wujiang River bisects the county from north to south, dividing it into two sections: the southern section, comprising about four-fifths of the county, is predominantly paddy fields, while the smaller northern section consists mainly of dry fields. The county's topography is complex and diverse, featuring three primary landforms: mountains, hills, and basins.

Wong'an is a cradle of life and a millennia-old cultural hub. Fossils of animal groups dating back 610 million years were discovered here, representing the earliest such remains found to date. Since the establishment of Jian'an County during the Tang Dynasty, it has a history spanning over 1,300 years. The wives of the Shuixi and Shuidong chieftains, Liu Shuzhen and She Xiang, respectively, wrote legendary chapters here in safeguarding national unity and ethnic solidarity.

Wong'an is a land of cultural excellence and a home that reveres learning and propriety. Over a thousand years ago, Niu Teng, the teacher of Tang Dynasty poet Wang Bo, served as Magistrate of Jian'an County, initiating a literary tradition in this region. The Qing Dynasty scholar Fu Yushu authored The Legend of the Mandarin Duck Mirror, pioneering Guizhou's theatrical tradition, while his work Records of My Hometown became China's first privately compiled local chronicle. Over the 500-year span of the Ming and Qing dynasties, Wengan produced 111 successful imperial examination candidates, including 19 who passed the highest-level examinations. Wengan holds the titles of “National Folk Culture and Art Homeland,” " China's Homeland of Rhapsodies,“ and ”National Advanced County in Culture.“ In 2017, Wengan County was honored as a ”National Advanced Unit in Mass Sports Work" by the General Administration of Sport of China and received an audience with General Secretary Xi Jinping.

Wong'an is a cradle of revolutionary heroes and a bastion of revolutionary spirit. The Red Army passed through Wong'an four times during the Long March, convening the historic Houchang Conference here. This pivotal meeting resolved the fundamental issue of political direction, reaffirmed the principle of the Party commanding the gun, and secured strategic initiative for the first time since the Long March began. Comrade Zhou Enlai hailed it as “the eve of a great turning point.” This cradle of heroes gave birth to figures such as Ren Chengji, who fought in the Xinhai Revolution; the revolutionary spy Leng Shaonong; the Guizhou hero Shu Baochu; and the anti-Japanese commander Xiong Zhengshi.
