Duxian County is located at the southernmost tip of Guizhou Province, bordering the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. To the north, it adjoins Duyun City, the prefectural capital. The county seat is 166 kilometers from Guiyang, the provincial capital, 740 kilometers south to Beihai City (the coastal gateway), and 600 kilometers north to Chongqing, a key city along the Yangtze River waterway. It serves as a vital land passage connecting Southwest China to Guangdong and Guangxi, earning it the titles “Southern Gateway of Guizhou” and “Gateway to Southwest China.” It is also recognized as the “Hometown of Chinese Lantern Art.” Covering a total area of 2,477 square kilometers, the county administers 8 towns and 1 subdistrict, comprising 85 villages (communities). By the end of 2024, its total population reached 353,000, with ethnic minorities such as the Buyi, Shui, and Miao constituting 80.6% of the population.
Duxian enjoys distinct geographical advantages. Bordering Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, it neighbors Guangdong and Guangxi to the east, overlooks Yunnan and Guizhou to the west, adjoins ASEAN countries to the south, and extends northward toward Sichuan. The Qian-Guang Railway, Lanhai Expressway, and National Highway G210 traverse the county north-south, while the Yu'an Expressway, Majia Expressway, and National Highway G552 connect east-west. The county features 8 expressway interchanges and 8 railway stations, including 3 passenger and freight terminals (Dushan Station, Mawei Station, Siting Station). with an annual throughput capacity of 10 million tons. It serves as Guizhou's “southern gateway” and ‘bridgehead’ to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Beibu Gulf region, acting as a vital passage for Guizhou and the broader Southwest to access the coastal ports of Guangdong and Guangxi. As a key node of the New Western Land-Sea Trade Corridor, it has historically been hailed as the “Key to the Southwest” and the “Throat to the Sea.”
Dushang boasts abundant energy resources. Its total water resources amount to 1.39 billion cubic meters, with a total storage capacity of 27.79 million cubic meters. The area houses one 500kV, two 220kV, six 110kV, and seven 35kV substations, serving as the “seaport” for the West-East Power Transmission initiative. Mineral resources are abundant and diverse. Proven reserves include over 20 million tons of high-quality calcite, over 30 million tons of iron ore, over 2 million tons of antimony ore, over 600,000 tons of zinc ore, over 100 million tons of decorative stone, and over 100 million tons of construction stone, offering vast development potential.
Dushan boasts abundant tourism resources. Natural scenery, cultural landmarks, and ethnic traditions harmoniously blend, with distinctive Yingshan culture, War of Resistance culture, and lantern festival culture. Shenhe Bridge holds significant historical importance in the War of Resistance, symbolizing the frontline stretching “from Lugou Bridge in the north to Shenhe in the south.” The unique “Three Pickles” cuisine is renowned, with Lu Xun praising the salted pickles as “China's finest vegetarian dish.” With a forest coverage rate of 66% and an average annual temperature of 15°C, it serves as an ideal summer retreat and was selected as one of China's first “Traditional Cultural Tourism Cities.”
Dushan possesses a solid industrial foundation. By restructuring primary industries, expanding secondary industries, and strengthening tertiary industries, its industrial development has accelerated. It has been designated as a National Demonstration Base for New Industrialization, a National-level Technology Enterprise Incubator, a National E-commerce Demonstration County, the Guizhou-Hong Kong (Dushan) Cooperation Park, and a Provincial Breakthrough Zone for Swine Industry Aggregation. It has also been included in the third batch of National Comprehensive Pilot Counties for New Urbanization, with the Shenhe Bridge War of Resistance site listed as a National Red Tourism Classic Scenic Area.
