Jianhe has a long history and rich cultural heritage. Formerly known as Gou'e and also called Qingjiang, it was historically considered a “barbarian” region. It was first established during the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty (1729), making it the latest to be formally established nationwide. Despite its relatively short history of just over 290 years, it is home to the Miao ethnic group, Dong ethnic groups, ancient biological sites dating back over 100 million years, radon-sulfur hot springs originating from the Cambrian period, the legendary beauty goddess Yang A Sha, vibrant ethnic costumes and embroidery techniques, unique traditional cuisine, and invaluable intangible cultural heritage. These elements collectively form Jianhe's distinctive regional culture, earning it the reputations of “the hometown of Yang A Sha,” " the World Capital of Tin Embroidery,“ and ”The Sacred Water of the Miao Region · The Bathing Capital of the West."
Jianhe is located in the southeastern part of Guizhou Province, in the central region of Qiandongnan Prefecture. The county covers an area of 2,180 square kilometers, comprising 11 towns, 1 township, 1 subdistrict, and 183 villages (residents), with a total population of 280,000, of which 96% are minority ethnic groups primarily consisting of the Miao and Dong peoples. Jianhe County is a national key county for rural revitalization assistance and the largest reservoir resettlement county in Guizhou Province. The county seat was relocated and rebuilt in 2004 due to the construction of the Sanbanxi Hydropower Station, a key national project during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, and the relocation was completed in 2007. In 2024, the county's GDP reached 7.005 billion yuan, with the per capita disposable income of urban residents at 41,350 yuan, an increase of 3.6%; while the per capita disposable income of rural residents was 14,369 yuan, an increase of 7.0%.
Jianhe is a slope terrace transitioning from the middle mountainous terrain of Leigong Mountain to the Xiang-Guang Hills. The terrain slopes from southwest to northeast, with the highest elevation at 1,623.3 meters and the lowest at 348 meters. Due to the steep slopes and deep valleys, it is known as the “nine mountains, half water, and half a field” region. The region falls within the subtropical monsoon climate zone, characterized by distinct seasons, mild winters without extreme cold, and summers without extreme heat. It receives ample rainfall, with an annual average temperature of 16.7°C and an annual average precipitation of 1,220 millimeters. Jianhe is rich in forest resources, being one of the 28 key collective forest areas in China and one of the 10 key forest counties in Guizhou Province, with a forest coverage rate of 72.42%. The county is part of the Yangtze River basin, with major rivers including the Qing Shui River, Wu Mi River, and Ba Gua River. In 2006, the Sanbanxi Power Station created the mountainous freshwater lake Yang'asha Lake, with a main navigation channel of 130 kilometers, a secondary navigation channel of 120 kilometers, an average water surface width of 360 meters, a maximum water surface width of 1,500 meters, and a total area of 85 square kilometers.
Jianhe County is rich in ethnic customs and boasts unique tourism resources, with 340 first-class resources, 147 second-class resources, 69 third-class resources, 9 fourth-class resources, and 3 fifth-class resources. Ethnic festivals such as the Sisters' Festival, the Gucang Festival, “February 2nd,” and “March 3rd” are vibrant and have been passed down for thousands of years. Twenty-nine villages have been listed in the National Register of Traditional Villages. It features the Jianhe Hot Spring City, a national 4A-rated tourist attraction whose physical and chemical indicators rival those of the world-renowned Vichy Hot Springs in France; There is the Ba Lang Cambrian Paleontological Fossil Site, China's 11th “golden nail” dating back 530 million years and bearing witness to the origin of life; There is the Miao Water Drum Dance, hailed as a living fossil of ethnic primitive dance, and Miao Tin Embroidery, listed as one of China's first batch of national intangible cultural heritage items.
In recent years, Jianhe County has adhered to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, thoroughly studied and implemented the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and President Xi Jinping's important speeches during his inspection of Guizhou, fully implemented the decisions and plans of the central and provincial governments, firmly upheld the bottom lines of development and ecology, leveraged its ethnic culture and ecological environment as two valuable assets to build a renowned domestic and international ethnic cultural tourism destination, focused on the “Four New” initiatives to advance the “Four Modernizations,” and worked to establish a robust industrial system for county prosperity and people's well-being, continuously enhancing the overall level of industrial development, The county's economy and society have continued to develop rapidly and healthily.
