Pingtao County, located in southern Guizhou Province and under the jurisdiction of Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, is renowned as the “City of China's Sky Eye.” Spanning an area of 2,806 square kilometers, the county administers 9 towns, 1 township, 1 subdistrict, and 131 administrative villages (communities). Its total population stands at 332,500, with ethnic minorities accounting for 59.6% of the residents.
Pingtao stands as a premier destination for cosmic exploration and astronomical research. The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), the world's largest single-dish radio telescope, was successfully established in Kedou Town, Pingtao County, and inaugurated on September 25, 2016. President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter, hailing it as “China's Sky Eye.” As the world's largest single-dish radio telescope, the “Chinese Sky Eye” will maintain its global leadership for the next 20 to 30 years. In 2022, the National Astronomical Observatory's FAST Data Processing Center project commenced construction in Pingtao. The county is increasingly becoming an international gateway for astronomical research, a globally significant hub for radio astronomy academic exchange, an international astronomy science education base, and a center for scientific achievement transformation.
Pingtan is a premier destination for leisure vacations and educational tours. Serving as a vital ecological barrier in the upper reaches of the Pearl River, it features a subtropical monsoon humid climate. Its forest coverage rate has increased from 59.24% in 2015 to 70.74% in 2024, making it a natural oxygen bar and geological park crafted by nature. The county boasts world-renowned astronomical, geological, and bridge marvels. Its Ya Zhou pottery craftsmanship, with over 600 years of cultural heritage, and the Miao ethnic group's Mon key Drum Dance are listed as National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Leveraging resources like astronomy, geology, bridges, and culture, it has launched “Astronomy Science +” educational products. Pingtao has earned prestigious tourism accolades including China's Top Ten Science and Technology Tourism Bases, National Science Education Base, National Study Tour Base for Primary and Secondary Students, National Scenic Area, National 4A-Level Tourist Attraction, National Geopark, China's Most Beautiful Small Town, and Top Ten Scenic Cities in Beautiful China. Pingtao is a resource-rich land ripe for investment and enterprise. Located just 50 minutes by car from Duyun, the prefectural capital, and 90 minutes from Guiyang, the provincial capital, Pingtao serves as a core node in Qiannan Prefecture's strategy to build an astronomical economic hub and southern tourism wellness center. The county boasts over 400 kilometers of expressways and national/provincial highways, with paved roads connecting every township and hardened roads reaching every village group. The east-west Yu'an Expressway and the soon-to-be-completed north-south Gui-Ping Expressway are rapidly integrating Pingtao into Guiyang's one-hour transportation circle, establishing it as a vital hub linking Guizhou and Guangxi and a key bridgehead for reform and opening-up in southern Guizhou. The county is rich in hydropower, coal, ornamental stone, marble, and clay resources. Pingtao's “Golden Ink Jade” stone products enjoy strong sales both within and outside the province. In recent years, Pingtao County has comprehensively advanced supply-side structural reforms, accelerating agricultural development, continuously promoting industrial transformation, and vigorously developing the tertiary sector.
Looking ahead, Pingtang County will be guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. It will fully implement the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress and the State Council Document No. 2 (2022), coordinate the “Five-in-One” overall layout, advance the “Four Comprehensives” strategic layout, and fully embrace the new development philosophy. The county will prioritize high-quality development as the overarching goal, focus on the “Four New” initiatives to drive the “Four Modernizations,” We will safeguard the bottom lines of both development and ecology, maintain the healthy development of the county's economy and overall social stability, enhance the people's sense of fulfillment, happiness, and security, and strive to compose a splendid chapter in building a “New Pingtang with Six Modernizations.”
